Matthew’s research focuses on employing environmental (e)DNA to rapidly assess critically endangered crocodilians and pygmy hippos in West African Protected Areas. The goal of this project is to develop a low-cost, time-efficient detection and monitoring protocol to better focus conservation efforts for these species. He is a fellow with the FIU Tropical Conservation Institute. He received his PhD from the University of Florida in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation in 2013. Contact: matthew.shirley@fiu.edu
